Fumigation in Newcastle and the Hunter

Fumigation means filling a sealed space with a gas that reaches pests a spray can’t, holding it there, then airing the space out before anyone goes back in. Benefit Pest Management can fumigate silos, containers, sheds and, depending on the reason and the pest, houses, across Newcastle and the Hunter. Our head technician holds pest management technician licence 5083379, issued by the New South Wales EPA. He also holds a fumigation licence.

We get back to every enquiry within one business day.

What fumigation is and what it isn't

The word fumigation gets asked to do a lot of work. When an agent asks for an end of lease fumigation, what you get from us is a misting of the carpets, the floorboards and the back yard. That’s our end of lease pest control service.

Gas fumigation is a different job. The space is cleared of people and sealed, the gas is released, and it’s held there for a set time so it reaches every corner. Then the space is aired out until the gas has dropped to a safe level, and only then does anyone go back in.

The difference from a spray is reach. A spray works on the surfaces it lands on. A fumigant fills the whole space, so it can get at insects living inside timber.

The gases and why they're restricted

Fumigants work because they’re poisonous, and that’s why they’re kept in licensed hands. Three gases come under the fumigation licence, which is separate from the pest management technician licence that covers our everyday work.

Methyl bromide

What it's used on

Goods crossing borders, to stop pests travelling with them

Why it's restricted

It damages the ozone layer, and it has been phased out for most uses under the Montreal Protocol. It’s also toxic to people

Phosphine

What it's used on

Stored grain and grain silos

Why it's restricted

A highly toxic respiratory poison, released from pellets

ProFume, a brand of sulfuryl fluoride

What it's used on

Grain, dried fruit and nuts after harvest

Why it's restricted

It’s toxic to the nervous system, and it’s a potent greenhouse gas

Every one of them is dangerous to breathe and can cause death.

When fumigation services are the right answer

Fumigation is for pests inside something a spray can’t get into. That means grain in a silo, goods packed in a shipping container, or a shed full of stored produce.

A house is fumigated only for particular pests and reasons. Termites that come up from the ground are dealt with by a chemically treated zone or a baiting system on our termite treatment page, not by gas. If what you’ve got is an ongoing pest problem on a business site, that’s commercial pest control. On a farm, the sheds are part of our rural pest control work. The grain is where gas comes in.

Export fumigation: containers and grain

Goods leaving or coming into the country can be fumigated to stop pests travelling with them. The licence covers export items and storage items, such as grain and shipping containers, using the gases above.

This is work we’re licensed for and actively looking to take on. If you’re shipping grain or packing containers, ring us and tell us what you’re shipping, how much of it there is and where it’s headed.

Booking a fumigation

Ring us with four details: what’s being fumigated, how big it is, where it is, and what pest you’re dealing with. Most jobs can be quoted on the phone, and where we need to see it first, we come out before quoting.

How soon we can do it depends on where you are, the size of the job and the time of year, and you’ll get a real date on the phone. On the day, the space has to be clear of people and pets.

FAQ

Before you book a fumigation

Can I fumigate my own home?

Don’t try it. The gases are poisonous, and a poor seal, too short a time with the gas held in, or someone going back in too soon puts people at risk.

What is home fumigation for?

It’s for pests that live deep inside the structure, such as drywood termites and some timber-boring beetles, where the gas has to reach right into the timber.

How long before we can go back in?

It depends on the gas and the space. You’ll find the time for your job in the written instructions you get before it starts.

How much does fumigation cost?

You get a fixed price before anything starts, set by what’s being fumigated, how big it is and the pest you’re dealing with. We don’t publish fumigation prices.

Licensed to do it

Fumigation is a licensed job, and our head technician holds the licence. If gas isn’t the right answer for what you’ve got, you’ll know before you spend anything.

We get back to every enquiry within one business day. A quote costs nothing, and neither does the advice.
