Cottages, vineyards and the calls we get

A treatment trench along the base of a brick wall.
In the coalfield towns, the old timber in the miners’ cottages is reason enough to keep a termite inspection on the calendar.
Finding live termites moves the job on to termite treatment. The inspection report sets out the options.
If the property is a vineyard or rural block, rural pest control takes in the sheds and outbuildings along with the house.
For the business side of a winery, commercial pest control runs on a set schedule.

Termites
Termites in the Hunter Valley coalfield towns
Coal mining shaped Kurri Kurri and Weston, and it left them with timber cottages built for the miners. Old timber over a damp subfloor is a termite colony’s idea of a good address.
The sheds and outbuildings on a vineyard are built for wine and machinery, and they are rarely the thing anyone thinks to have looked at. Werakata and the Watagans are protected as national parks, so for a house on their edge the bush over the back fence is permanent. A colony nesting in a tree on the park side can feed on the house side of the fence.
The Australian Standard sets inspection intervals at no more than twelve months, and we shorten that for an older house or a bush block. Around Cessnock, the coalfield cottages count as the first and the houses on the park edges as the second. Thermal imaging and moisture detection are included in every termite inspection. Room by room, what a termite inspection in Cessnock checks is listed under termite inspections.

Getting on the Cessnock calendar
We are in the Cessnock area most weeks, and active termites are the one thing that jumps the diary, so say so when you ring. How soon we can be on site depends on where you are and the time of year, and you will get a real date on the phone rather than an optimistic one.
From December to March the calendar fills, because that is when most people ring. If an inspection is due, book it in spring and keep it well clear of the week after Christmas.
Getting it booked

Local questions
Questions we get about pest control in Cessnock
Is a winery a commercial job or a rural one?
Commercial, once there is a kitchen involved, because that is the part an auditor looks at. How that side runs is explained under commercial pest control. The house and the sheds on the same block are rural work. We can quote both sides on the one visit.
I've bought a miners' cottage in Kurri Kurri. Where do I start?
With a termite inspection, before any cosmetic work. In an old timber house, soft skirting can mean age or a colony working inside the wall. Once the report says which, you know if you are painting or treating.
We back onto Werakata National Park. Does that change anything?
Yes, in two ways. A bush block is one of the reasons we bring the inspection interval in under twelve months. We also check the trees on your side of the fence, since a nest in one of them can feed on the house without crossing the boundary at all.
The house is in a Mine Subsidence District. Is that your problem or someone else's?
Someone else’s. Cessnock and Kurri Kurri are both declared Mine Subsidence Districts, and ground movement there is a building matter for Subsidence Advisory NSW. Ours is the timber and whether termites have got into it.
Our house in Cessnock is only a few years old. Does it still need a termite inspection?
Yes. Termites are mostly subterranean and work up from the ground into whatever timber a house has, new or old. Whatever the build date, the Australian Standard’s maximum interval between inspections is the same.
How do you price a termite inspection on an old miners' cottage?
On what it takes to inspect, and in an old cottage that mostly comes down to getting underneath it. A subfloor with room to crawl through is a shorter job than a low one with piers close together, and any history of termites adds time. Tell us the town and what you know about the house, and we can usually give you a figure on the phone.
